Bulls news: Jim Boylen says that unlike LA, Chicago cares about defense

Bulls news: Jim Boylen is entering his second season as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, and after a horrendous 2018-19 campaign, he wants to make sure that the team will improve this season.

Boylen wants the Bulls to play better defensively, which is something they were not able to do last season. Chicago was 25th in the league in terms of defensive efficiency, and one of the reasons why is the fact that they were not able to take good care of the ball. They were 19th in the league with 14.1 per game.

The veteran coach understands that limiting their turnovers will lead to better defensive executions, which is something that they need to work on this season.

“Are we going to be a rock ‘em, sock ‘em Charles Oakley, Hakeem Olajuwon type like the (1994 Knicks and ) ’94-’95 Rockets? We are not. But we have to be better. How? Your offense dictates your defense, too. You can’t turn the ball over and have people running the other way. We can’t take plays off. Last season we had guys take plays off.”

Boylen wants the Bulls’ defense to represent the city of Chicago and the history of the franchise. He also took a shot at the LA teams for not really putting the effort to focus their attention on defense.

“I just want us to compete every play for the city, for the heritage and the history of the Bulls. People look at me when I say that like I am a complete dummy. I think it matters. I think we have to play harder for the city. We have a tough city. We’re not in LA. They don’t talk about defense in LA; they don’t. Here when you give up a layup the whole crowd is like, ‘oh.’ The air comes out.”

The Bulls have a lot of young talent on their roster, and at this point, it is safe to say that they’re not good enough to hang with the best teams in the league. However, if they will be able to play good defense all season long, they might pull upsets from time to time.

But Boylen doesn’t want to rely on luck. He wants the Bulls to work hard every night, no matter what the outcome of the games will be. He wants his players to repay the fans by giving their 100 percent whenever they’re on the court, especially when they’re playing at home.

The expectations for the Bulls might not be so high, but their fans still want to see them do their best.
