New York Knicks News: After spending an entire year freeing up enough cap space to sign two superstars to max deals, the Knicks were in the position to turn things around in last month’s free agency. Unfortunately, the players that were rumored to be interested in signing with them eventually joined another team, leaving them with no choice but to spend their money on mid-tier talents.
One of the Knicks’ acquisitions in the offseason is Julius Randle, who signed a three-year deal with the team. The seventh overall pick from the 2014 NBA Draft had an impressive stint with the New Orleans Pelicans last season, as he averaged 21.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. He’s expected to become one of the Knicks’ primary options on offense, but apparently, him, along with the rest of the players New York has signed, aren’t enough to convince the fans that the Knicks are worth being taken seriously.
Still, Randle believes that the Knicks are going to be good. He told Marc Berman of the NY Post that despite the fact that they are being slept on by a lot of people, he believes that the team has what it takes to be very competitive.
“It’s easy to do that because the last couple of seasons have been hard. It’s easy to underestimate us. But we’re a deep team. We’re a very deep 1-to-15 with guys who can play. If they underestimate us, I don’t care.”
The Knicks have been one of the worst teams in the league over the past couple of years. Last season, they finished with the worst record in the NBA. To make things worse for them, they were not able to get the first overall pick in the draft, which went to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Then, the misery of the free agency followed as Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving spurned them for the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks’ biggest offseason announcement was the signing of Randle, and given that the fans expected a lot more, being pessimistic about the team next season is understandable.
But Randle isn’t the only one who’s saying that the Knicks are going to shock a lot of people. In fact, his teammates have the same mindset heading into next season. If they can work together as a cohesive unit behind head coach David Fizdale’s system, they might prove a lot of people wrong.
